I love Fall clothing, but they tend to lack the vibrancy and color prevalent on the Spring runways. Although neutrals are big this Fall/Winter 2010, I was pleased to see rich jewel tones and bright prints in Thuy’s show. And speaking of jewels, the collaboration with Swarovski produced unique pieces like a gold shift dress armor plated with bronze and metallic pyramids, and a swingy grey wool dress with a cleverly designed paisley-style print detailed entirely out of crystals.
The show was full of eye-candy: glittering bronzes, sparkling fuchsias, even a black and white dalmation print. Light fabrics and strategic layering created a beautiful fluidity while maintaining an extremely ladylike shape. Some of the detailing around the waistline reminded me of a modern version of a kimono, but by keeping the layers airy and the folds structured, there was no sense of bulkiness. I was mesmerised by a red and black patterned dress with angel wing like draping along the arms. One can’t help but exude a natural grace when enveloped a dress like that.
The image of a Thuy woman radiates confidence, independence, and charisma, with a flash of exuberance. I can’t wait for Fall!

Thuy Diep borrows from the glamour of a silver screen goddess and adds an S&M twist to create a highly structural collection for Spring 2010. The iconic long and loose big white dress from the 30s is updated with trim cuts, succinct details and sprightly hues.
It’s short and sweet for spring, with many strapless and off-shoulder dresses, slim skirts and tapered trousers. Material use is light, with emphasis on neat gatherings and careful draping. Look forward to interesting cutouts, peek-a-boos and plenty of open-backs (revealing ties and fastenings in a messy chic manner). Exposed zippers hold their own, traveling around the bodice and over the shoulder, replacing straps. Thick black sashes and piping cinch and shape the hourglass figure.
Coifs are slicked back and dapper tuxedo jackets come cropped and decked out with hardware. The classic trench now shimmers in gold and makes a statement in translucent latex. Fitted bra tops are at the forefront, shown through a sheer peach cap sleeve blouse and under a low slung asymmetrical tank. Diep offers a collection that is enticing yet unpretentious. For spring, the intuition is playful.

Designer Thuy Diep offered a refreshing and organic collection for Fall 2009, with emphasis on bold hues and languid lines. Rich teals and peacock greens punched through the pewter and black foundation. Form-fitting dresses and coats were also incorporated, although carrying a sort of effortless detailing seen in the “uneven embellishments” of side drawstring ruching, off-balanced pleats, and asymmetrical zippers and piping.
While the lovely mustard yellow (in silk charmeuse) was the color darling of the line, sparkling metallic tunics, gleaming minnow-y prints, and those charming ruched white gloves added a touch of stylish maturity. The crewnecks and a repeated showing of sleek, belted blazers also create a sensible character.
The presentation “hints of renewal and optimism” in the final looks. A series of beautiful ivory pieces, including a loose-cut blouse tucked into a billowing tulip skirt and the evening trenchcoat with puff sleeves, effused an elegant and light-hearted tone. Equally striking are the sharp geometric graphics against fluttering silk. Fall need not be dark and gloomy after all.
