Rebecca Taylor Fall 2009

Rebecca TaylorFor Fall 2009, Rebecca Taylor delivers a glorious interpretation of “imagery from Northern European fairytales” by utilizing lilac and minty pastels, luminescent layers of chiffon, and luxurious jewel tones.

Field flowers are translated into lively magenta dresses with ruched sleeves while the Scandinavian sea is captured with diagonal ruffle separates as well as hues of smoky quartz and navy. Metal and stud embellishments decked out everything from cashmere sweaters and coats to champagne slinky tanks. Fair isle cardigans and grey flannel brought warmth to all the metallic jacquard pieces. Large leather clutches and fur cropped jackets provided an edgy feel to this very romantic and feminine collection.

Playful and flirty elements materialized with a deep-V, silk ruffle blouse tucked into loose houndstooth trousers and a lovely wool and mohair cobweb vest shown over a swinging skirt. Leopard print also appears on slim cigarette pants and pencil skirts. Chunky Lucite necklaces added depth against delicate textures.

Tibi Fall 2009

Designer Amy Smilovic instills a Russian fairytale’s “light-hearted moodiness” into Tibi’s Fall 2009 presentation. Ornate bird motifs and rich furs highlighted the collection while lavish use of gold trimming, which hinted of embroidery and brocade, kept off-shoulder folk dresses and jumpsuits refreshingly modern.

Expect solid citrus shades on flowy, asymmetrical sheaths and dusky hues on tailored outerwear. The theme is well captured with the dainty tsarina-inspired ruffle riding jacket and the long and lean Bolshevik wool coat. Large crystal chandelier earrings and traditional fur hats added an icy glamour.

Staple pieces include the stovepipe stretch wool pants and dark scooped tanks. There were a number dazzling looks with the boatneck Doystoevsky bloom sheath – a kaleidoscope of magenta blossoms in a teal pool – and the Enchanted Forest chiffon dress with gold beading. Other prints include purple and teal paisley, seen on tunics under fox furs, and the navy Firebird emblem.

CHOCHENG Fall 2009

Cho Cheng’s Fall 2009 presentation sings of Shanghai chic in the 1960s. Cheerful colors include turquoise, “cherry”, and “canary yellow”. There was heavy emphasis on luxurious suiting in the form of trim wool blazers with prim collars and French cuffs, velvet riding habits adorned with gold buttons, and jackets complete with satin lapels and lacy ruffles. The designer’s signature use of velvet is also seen in the cropped pleated pants and mini skirts. All looks were topped off with dapper blonde bobs, a chiseled appearance which brought an air of aristocracy.

The traditional qipao has also been translated into a more contemporary context, seen with the metallic tints and slinkier fit. Showstoppers include a series of “siren” gowns in champagne gold with sequins, baby pink complete with bow and train, and the white satin Sabrina gown. This statuesque silhouette was a vibrant throwback to old Hollywood glamour.

Twinkle by Wenlan Fall 2009

Wenlan Chia delivered a “timeless chic” experience in her Fall 2009 presentation at the Classic Car Club. From the trendy West Village location to the brilliant refreshments (an old-fashioned popcorn stand and glass Coke bottles wooed the crowds), Twinkle’s fall collection enthuses a “fusion of memory lane and runway” with special tribute to Audrey Hepburn, a gal whose life radiated incredible style and purpose.

A quick runway presentation was given before guests got to mingle and examine closer the gorgeous frocks and equally stunning five vintage cars on display. Twinkle’s signature chunky sweaters this season call for oversized comfort – a wool grey reversible sweater features a slimmer body rising up into a double-stranded, extra large cowl neck. Also innovative is the mossy green, triple threat sweater cape dress and a slew of thickly-knit accessories which may render outerwear unnecessary.

Trim and airy pieces, such as the wool plum trenchcoat and strapless slate dress, and the soft blouses and fine gauge cardigans, balance the collection well. Expect vivid hues this fall, seen in Wenlan’s watercolor-spotted and edgy floral prints of citrus yellow and magenta.

As the girls leaned candidly against the Triumph TR6 (this beauty was the same shade as their coral red lips!) or the cobalt blue Ferrari GT4, one couldn’t help but picture a feisty English Rose darting over the crooked cobblestones of a city plaza, a “rebellious socialite” eager for some diversion and adventure come fall.

Marie Claire and Macy’s Kensie Girl Fest

On Friday night –mag in the redo- Marie Claire joined with Macy’s to soft push Kensie Girl’s Holiday Collection. A dj spun the latest tunes from Rhiana as waiters served sparkling pink lemonade, cupcakes and lollipop shaped sweets inscribed with the word Kensie Girl (let’s remember this is a contemporary brand definitely geared to the tween set).

And while there weren’t any notables on site there was no shortage of camera crews- we hear Nina Garcia has a new reality show- Running in Heels. Can we expect to see snippets from the tepid event? Doubtful. What was noteworthy was the price point- in these recessionary-like times a girl has to use her noggin’. Kensie’s well-priced collection offers a wide variety of pieces at price point that ranges from $50 to a $135.

The savvy mini fashionista will wield this collection to great affect. The collection featured many of season’s must haves- including- autumnal hues, plaid, ruffles and of course the mini! Steadied by black the palette included piedmont (green), purple, pink, a tealy turquoise and a bolt of orange. Chunky knit cardigans paired with little plaid minis. Standouts included a satin- racer back vest priced at $58, or a tri-colored- full skirted mini at $78 and little black dress with ruffles in purple and pink down the center also at $78. There was a healthy presence of plaid including a charming coat with portrait collar at the affordable price of $135.

Many of these glam girl pieces are sure to make their way on to the Wish Lists of teen girls everywhere.
