Tadashi Shoji Fall 2011

Model Jia Jing in Tadashi Shoji

When a designer looks to the natural world for a point of reference, it’s always interesting to me how they will interpret something so literal– will it manifest itself in an impressionistic manner? Go beyond the natural to something hyper-real? Will it be a point of departure or a held meditation? For Tadashi Shoji, who last year gave us that wonderful backdrop of what looked like threshed wheat against light-as-air gowns, the answer is one of mood, harmony and balance. The Fall 2011 collection proved to us again where his strength lies: the cocktail gown. In deep, vibrant jewel tones and feathered skirts, the dresses offered a rich, avian perspective next to more subdued dark lace. Organza floral detail provided textural interest and silk chiffon floated down the runway in colors such as claret, pebble, sunglow and moss.

The soft, ruffled romanticism of Tadashi Shoji’s Spring 2011 collection felt pulled straight out of a John Singer Sargent painting or a Tolstoy novel. In beautiful lavender, clay, ivory and stone colors, the dresses were displayed against a backdrop of threshed wheat, which lent an earthy, contrasting atmosphere to the gorgeously romantic gowns. Models were bare faced and serene, their waists wrapped in black satin ties that trailed down their sides. Short shift-like dresses bore intricate overlays of sheer lace and ruffles sprouted from shoulders and across hems. The collection was inspired by Renaissance frescos of Piero della Francesca Botticelli. The graceful interpretation felt red-carpet ready, perfect for a young ingénue.

Tadashi Sodji presented a frilly feminine collection this season.  But don’t be fooled by all the ruffles and lace, because this girl is very sophisticated and sexy.  Different materials and textures were shaped, pleated and draped to create beautiful evening-wear clothes with a modern edge.  Some stand-out pieces included a long sleeved, skin tight metallic dress that glistened like a starlit night sky and had lines that wrapped around the model’s body with sheer cutouts.  Another was a floor length gown with a plunging neckline and meticulously draped iridescent fabric perfect for a goddess ready to walk the red carpet.— Maria Giannakakis

Designer Tadashi Shoji unveiled a crisp and very upbeat dress collection for Fall 2009. Vivacious hues, such as Rapture Rose, played an important role in casting this season’s message of hope and clarity. Wisteria, turquoise, and lime also livened up the sheer cream and ebony numbers.

Shoji worked a stunning, minimalistic approach in his styling where light elements (such as ruffled chiffon, sweetheart halters, and bubble pleats) received the rock glam treatment. The black tights, patent leather heels, studded belts, and crystal rhinestone baubles kept things powerful and edgy without overshadowing the feminine undertones.
