Heidi Gardner Spring 2014

Heidi_Gardner_1

Last Tuesday night was the SS14 presentation of New York Based jewelry designer Heidi Gardner. Set in a light, airy space at the Highline loft, the stark white minimalism of the dual rooms became the backdrop of Heidi’s slightly dark and macabre aesthetic. Models in nude jumpsuits entered the room  and stood on tall cubes, gesturing slightly with their hands to showcase her work. At eye-length along the white walls were protruding dummy hands or what looked to be driftwood that held up her creations. We saw: a pair of gold majestic looking seahorses that looked to be like hair pins, startling shark jaw pendants, and a gorgeous pincushion of an anemone ring with the darkest pearl laid on top. Another stunner: a gold sting ray cuff with a sharp tail protruding up the arm. Shark tooth rings made a repeat appearance in what looked to be gold, silver and pewter and shark jaws looked like hunter traps but wrapped in gold, still delicate and hanging from a chain. It looked like sea creatures were on the designer’s mind to represent her Spring/Summer collection. Since her past work seemed preoccupied with skulls and human anatomy, it is interesting to see the designer extend her x-ray vision into other exoskeleton worlds.

Last night was the inaugural night of Lingerie Fashion Week/2013. Intimates brand FYI by Dani Read kicked off the newly minted festivities. The S&M inspired creations, complete with restraints, gags, harnesses and leashes, are not for the faint of heart. In fact, their tagline reads, “Women are weapons. Dress yourself as such.” The collection was unapologetically bold and radiated power, attitude and dark sexuality. The accessories were surprisingly delicate and subtle, with gold chains trailing down collars and thick metal belts cheekily named “Love Handles Belt” or “Mistress Leash”. The collection had an Egyptian motif which was quite apparent in the final look which was a flowing white robe topped with a gold Isis Headpiece.

Alan Cumming Perfume Launch With CB I Hate Perfume

Last night, I descended into the depths of the Ace Hotel to attend the launch of Alan Cumming’s new perfume, 2nd (Alan) Cumming.  It was held at the Liberty Hall  which is a dark, sexy little bar in the bowels of the Ace. I got a drink, sat in one of the soft leather couches and took in the scene: men in kilts stood by tables which showcased the perfume, sprayed provocatively on male underwear. Since I was there to experience the scent, I decided, after some consideration, to pick up the item and put my nose to it. For the few seconds I held it to my face, I smelled a kind of clean, smoky earthiness, not unlike a scent that you would equate to equestrian sweat. If you’re at all familiar with CB I Hate Perfume, you will know the creative ways in which this company approaches scent-making. With fragrance concepts like, “Black March, Wild Hunt, Burning Leaves, Cradle of Light, In The Library” you can imagine that their approach is one of high reaching abstraction. Christopher Brosius is the creative mind behind this perfume house and his unique, whimsical, far-reaching products are one of great delight, not unlike Alice sniffing her elixir before drinking it. The two men are personal friends and Alan approached the company to create his own line. The result was 2nd (Alan) Cumming which is all about “Sex, Scotch, Cigars and Scotland”. The perfume itself has notes of Bergamot, Black Pepper, Scotch Pine, Malt Whiskey, Cigar, Heather, Douglas Fir, Rubber, Worn Leather, Highland Mud, Burnt Rubber, Peat Fire and White Truffle. Perfect for the moors or the everyday, inspired, Scottish urbanite.
