Curated by JFW and Jetro, Japanese Fashion Week in New York presented us with fresh new designs from Aptform, Mikio Sakabe, Naoshi Sawayanaho, Shida Tatsuya, Hideaki Sakaguchi, Chaolu Lab, Tiny Dinosaur, and Yu.  Modern architectural silhouettes mixed with heavy fabrics, futuristic cuts and wooly hats were some noticeable standouts at this intriguing show. Tia Cibani, the creative powerhouse behind the Ports 1961 label brings Modern Glossy a preview of her spring 2011 collection. Heavy use of black and white, with electric hues dominate the line. Inspired by Patti Smith, the clothing exuded feeling of individualism, glamor and rock and roll. The silhouettes were structural yet wearable. Cibani plays with extremes in fashion, and always can channel inspiration into something unique, practical and special for the modern woman she celebrates.

The immensely immediate popularity of Prabal Gurung’s reputation proceeded him as Anna Wintour, Rachel Zoe, and Zoe Saldana adorned the outskirts of his Fall/Winter runway show this season. Needless to say, he lived up to it. His collection fared mostly on luxuriously tailored wools, silks and a drop dead gorgeous viscose gazar in stunning burnished gold, bottle green, and crimson red. His asymmetric tailoring worked well in both silks and wool, expertly shown to look color blocked with design purpose. Playful neutral fur and feather additions in dresses and jackets added a touch of old world glamor to the modernity of silhouette and line while a sprinkling of swarovski shot in a bit of glam. A bold black and crimson hooded drop-shouldered cape in a luxe double faced wool stole the show until a red carpet worthy crimson strapless gown closed down the catwalk to thunderous applause (Take note Rachel Zoe!). It seems Mr. Gurung still has a devotedly steady following. A following which is completely and utterly deserved.— Rachel Rozzi

Romance was in the air at the Toni Maticevski Fall /Winter 2010 show.  Long romantic flowing pale skirts with sequins and gold leaves floated down the runway on fairy like creatures. It was Soft Sophisticated Feminine Elegance… It made you want to fall in Love. Black fitted long evening gowns covered in mounds of detail and lace were soon to follow…  It made you want to have an Affair. This Aussie certainly knows how to dress the lady for the party and making the party all about the lady.  A sequined black bra reminiscent of Madonna’s early 1990’s World Tour kept popping into play…we will see if it works this decade for the fall.
